International Conference in Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake

It is about ten years from 921 Earthquake had happened and it is a proper time to review the results of all efforts and investigations done by Taiwan government. International Conference in Commemoration of the 10th Anniversary of the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake is held collaboratively by National Science Council, Central Geological Survey, National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, Central Weather Bureau, Architecture and Building Research Institution, National Disaster Prevention and Protection Commission, Department of Health, Executive Yuan, National Central University, National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction, and Disaster Management Society of Taiwan. Some domestic and worldwide scholars are invited to discuss and exchange experiences for five areas: Earth Science, Earthquake engineering, Social Economy, Emergency Response, and Rescue and Emergency Medical Service. The conference was held at International Convention Center of National Taiwan University Hospital from Sept. 17 to 21, 2009, and the whole schedule includes conference in Taipei for three days and visiting of disaster area in central Taiwan for two days. The International conference includes 5 teams: Earthquake Science, Earthquake Engineering, Social Economy, Emergency Response and Rescue, and Emergency Medical Service with over 200 papers presented: 40 papers were presented by well-known worldwide scholars of earthquake disaster research, and 160 papers by domestic outstanding scholars. All papers recommended and researchers invited by main/assistant sponsor are all well-known scholars in their areas.

Through the exchange and review of the development of international research and technology of earthquake, we can obtain the newest information of research and practice as a policy reference for reconstruction after disasters, disaster rescue and research followed, and it also can increase our ability of reconstruction after disaster, disaster reduction, and research level. We have witnessed a new page of Taiwan experience for these 10 years and reached the purpose of sustainable use of territory.

There are 42 well-known scholars from USA, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, France, India, UK, Korea, and Malaysia presented their papers about disaster prevention and reduction of earthquake, and near 500 people from government, schools, private organizations attended the conference.
