Urban areas could be highly vulnerable to disasters due to their locations which are often situated in disaster hotspots with potential risks including: coastal lines, floodplains, active faults, volcanoes, tropical cyclones or severe storms.
Year 2019 offers a precious opportunity to community of disaster risk management in Taiwan and our partners to review what Taiwan has learned from the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake and the 2009 Typhoon Morakot. To commemorate lost lives of Chi-Chi Earthquake and Typhoon Morakot, there will be a series of activities in Taiwan to focus on empowering our society for better preparedness and resilience. And the Disaster Management Society of Taiwan (DMST) will deliver the 5th International Conference on Disaster Reduction (ICUDR) to be one of highlighted events. Around the world in last two decades, all lessons learned from major disasters have clearly proved science and technology do help disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, emergency response and post-disaster recovery.
The 5th ICUDR is an unique international event focusing on “Decades Review on Recovery: Learning from Best Practices” and DMST sincerely welcomes participants from all over the world. Researchers and practitioners in the field as well as PhD and postgraduate students are more than welcome to submit contributions and come to Taipei, Taiwan.
